Big Berkey Water Filter Review
Review and Big Berkey water filter cleaning tutorial

The Big Berkey Water Filtration System - it's how preppers purify
water for emergencies and for everyday health.

The Big Berkey Water Filtration System - it's how preppers purify
their water for emergencies and everyday. Here's a review of the
seven Berkey filters and a Berkey water filter cleaning tutorial.

Did you know bottled water has chemicals added to it? You'd be
surprised what they put into your bottled water. The average
bottled water has around four other ingredients added to it!

Did you know that ordinary tap water has chemicals added to it?
Sometimes also deadly bacteria or even viruses slip into the
water supply. You'll also find your tap water purposely medicated
with fluoride, arsenic and chlorine to name a few "ingredients" of
the municipal water supply.

Thankfully, you can purify your daily drinking water for just
pennies daily with a Big Berkey Water Filtration system.

Well worth the initial investment, the Big Berkey will help you:
  • Get clean everyday drinking water that tastes great so you
and your family will want to hydrate more often.
  • Filter raw untreated water to make it potable during
    emergencies.
  • Balance your ph to get a healthier you.
  • Improve your odds for surviving cancer naturally (or avoid it
    altogether).
  • Save money in the long run by skipping the bottled water.

The Big Berkey water filter, pictured above is ideal for everyday
and is portable for camping trips. It's a favorite among preppers
because it has long filter life (up to 3,000 gallons per filter
element). This powerful system purifies both treated water and
untreated raw water from such sources as remote lakes, streams,
stagnant ponds and water supplies in foreign countries, where
regulations may be substandard at best! Big Berkey is made of
quality stainless steel.

Nine Reasons to get a Big Berkey.
Big Berkey: it's how preppers filter their water everyday and for
emergencies, and for good reason! Here are nine reasons
preppers love their Big Berkey!

#1: Handles well for off-grid living, bugging out or
camping.
The Big Berkey water filtration system is ideal for outdoor
activities and a must in hostile environments where electricity,
water pressure or treated water may not be available. The Berkey
water system purifies your water without the use of obnoxious
chemicals like iodine or chlorine that was the standard procedure.
In fact, it helps filter out those chemicals from your tap water.

#2: Filters raw and untreated water.
The Big Berkey capably handles both treated water and untreated
raw water from such sources as remote lakes, streams, stagnant
ponds and even water supplies in foreign countries, where
regulations may be substandard.

Preppers appreciate the Berkey water filtration system as much
as the Red Cross, UNICEF and the Peace Corps.!

#3: Guards against waterborne outbreaks.
Believe it or not, viral contamination in the drinking water isn't as
much of a problem as bacterial or protozoan contamination, but it
does happen. Usually such viral problems are spread through
feces. These viruses usually attach to larger particles. Thankfully
the microbial filters in the Big Berkey can handle the problem of
waterborn outbreaks. The micro fine pores are so small that they
prevent micro fine particulate such as bacteria, virus and even
food coloring particulate from passing through the tortuous path
that water is able to pass through.

Boil orders and waterborne outbreaks
Did you know that sometimes "Boil Orders" are issued to
consumers advising that they boil tap water for drinking and
human-consumption uses, including cooking, hand washing, and
brushing teeth? A boil order was issued in New Orleans on Sept.
25, 2015, and it was the tenth time in five years the city issued
such a warning. Municipal agencies are required by law to test
waters, because anyone who ingests contaminated water may
become ill, but the highest at risk are the elderly, people with
immune deficiencies and young children.

Now you can feel more confident with "Boil Orders," which are
warnings about waterborne infectious agents, such as fecal
matter or E. coli bacteria. Boil orders may be issued for your
community and if so, you can check with your local water
department for specific instructions.

Here is
consumer information on boil orders from Massachusetts
and the official Website of the Executive Office of Energy and
Environmental Affairs.

Indeed pathogenic bacteria is sometimes a concern even in
ordinary tap water, but the Big Berkey water filtration system
adds a layer of confidence in removing microbiological
contaminants (bacteria). Even so, if warnings come for extreme
levels of viral and bacteriological contamination, Berkey
recommends the added protection of using 16 drops of plain
bleach or iodine to each gallon of water to pre-treat such water
before using the purifying system. The Berkey will then remove
the disinfectant from the water, leaving no odor or poor taste.

#4: Assures safe everyday drinking water.
Rest assured knowing your Big Berkey:

  • removes chemicals, bacteria, parasites... The Big Berkey
system removes pathogenic bacteria, cysts and parasites
    entirely and

  • extracts harmful chemicals.... Depending on your locale,
your water may be hiding herbicides, pesticides, VOCs, and
    harmful organic solvents

  • zaps out the nukes... Uranium and radon 222 are no match
for the Berkey Water Filtration system.

  • eliminates arsenic... Arsenic is an unfortunate ingredient of
ordinary tap water. Thankfully, the Big Berkey water
    purifications removes this toxin.

  • filters out heavy metals... Lead and mercury poisons our
everyday tap water, but the Big Berkey system removes
    these.

  • strains out the chlorine... and trihalomethanes(formed
especially during the chlorination of drinking water).

  • gets rid of unwanted fluorides... Preppers are beginning to
understand the dangers of fluoride and how the
municipalities in America are poisoning citizens. That's why
concerned citizens are turninggtot heir Big Berkey Water
Filtration system. It's well worth the effort and expense to
get the fluoride filters on your Big Berkey water filtration
system. While the PF-2 filters will slow your water filtration
process down, it will ensure you get water free from this
    neurotoxin.

#5: Keeps the beneficial minerals.
Rest assured that the Big Berkey Water filtration system purifies
your water, removing everything you don't want in your water, but
leaving in all the beneficial minerals your body needs.

#6: Promotes health.
Vitality is the underlying theme of owning a Big Berkey Water
Filtration system. The Big Berkey Water Filtration System reduces
nitrates, nitrites and unhealthy minerals found in water, including
lead and mercury. This system is so powerful it can remove food
coloring from water without removing the beneficial minerals your
body needs. Virtually no other system can duplicate this
performance!

  • Now you can also get a Big Berkey for your skin!  Did you
know fluoride and chlorine can enter your body through the
skin? Your skin absorbs everything so never put something
on your skin that you wouldn't eat! Your epidermis (skin) is
your largest organ and you can take care of it with a Big
Berkey shower filter. Bathe in fluoride-free water and
chlorine-free water with help from the Big Berkey fluoride
    filter for your shower head.

Restoring water to promote health and vitality, the Big Berkey
Water Filtration Sytem has become the favorite water filtration
system for cancer patients seeking natural alternatives and
remedies to help them survive.

#7: Filters 3,000-6,000 gallons of water per element!
With high performing and cleanable, self-sterilizing filters, the
Big Berkey water filtration system is long lasting and renewable.
The Big Berkey filters up to 3,000 gallons. (Each set of black
berkey elements can filter up to 6,000 gallons of water, and last
for years.)

The only way to get out all the unnecessary sodium, chlorine,
fluoride and other chemicals in your bottled water is to filter it.
An excellent filter is the Big Berkey Water filter, pictured
immediate right. The Big Berkey water filter gets rid of the
impurities so your water tastes great. That's the reason they add
sodium in bottled water, because after they filter it, the water is
left tasteless. Not so with the Big Berkey. Read what others have
to say by clicking the Amazon link right.

This powerful system purifies both treated water and untreated
raw water from such sources as remote lakes, streams, stagnant
ponds and water supplies in foreign countries, where regulations
may be substandard at best. Perfect for everyday use, outdoor
activities and a must in hostile environments where electricity,
water pressure or treated water may not be available. The Big
Berkey system removes pathogenic bacteria, cysts and parasites
entirely and extracts harmful chemicals such as herbicides,
pesticides, VOCs, organic solvents, radon 222 and
trihalomethanes. It also reduces nitrates, nitrites and unhealthy
minerals such as lead and mercury

#8: Filters faster than other water filtration systems.
Big Berkey Water filters have the power to filter water about
eight times than competing brands thanks to the  gravity-fed
system, which has an upper chamber and a lower chamber. Water
is ready when you need it without pumping! You just pour water
into the upper chamber. From there, gravity does all the work.

The more filters you have installed, the faster it operates.

#9: Is economical (costs about .02 cents a gallon).
Well worth the initial investment, the Big Berkey is an
economical system in the long run, and it will be the single most
important prep you'll own. The bottomline is that you get fresh
filtered water for about .02 a gallon. When you compare that to
bottled water, which costs around $1.50 a gallon, that's quite a
savings.

Best of all, you can feel better about the environment and reduce
your family's exposure to harmful BPAs (bisphenol A), an
industrial chemical and known toxin used to make certain plastics
and resins since the 1960s. Bottled water can cost hundreds of
dollars annually.

So why is owning a Big Berkey Water Filtration system for
preppers so important?
This gravity fed water purification
system will be there for you during emergencies, and everyday
life.

Big Berkey removes the most harmful viruses, bacteria, chemical
contaminants (such as chlorine), foul taste and odors; and can
remove heavy metals such as lead and mercury, and other
surprises lurking in your tap water, including arsenic and fluoride.
It removes impurities below the detectable levels, while leaving
in the beneficial minerals that your body needs.

The tap water in America is getting worse, daily!
Water quality in America varies from state to state and there are
many reasons for the differences. There are different methods of
collecting water (
e.g., reservoirs, snow melt, and groundwaters),
along with varied state regulations, and a wide array of weather-
related, agricultural and industrial influences. Some municipalities
add fluoride. Some add water softeners. None are good for your
health, though regulators may tell you otherwise!

Here are some examples of the toxic tap water you're currently
drinking:

  • California: Drought effects not only the quantity of water,
but the quality. California's drought, for example, has
brought some municipalities to rely on groundwater, which
has been deemed unsafe  for some 800,000 residents: the
water is contaminated with nitrates and arsenic.

  • Iowa: Rich farmlands of Iowa need cleansing of nitrates
(and their system is deterioriating). While the municipality
does its best to scrub the water clean of harmful nitrates,
much of the toxic stuff gets into the water supply. Why?
Because the system is an aging!

  • Texas: In Texas some water is being treated for having too
much iron and manganese. This is perplexing as there is no
health problems. The water is  a nuisance they say  because
the water can turn reddish brown and stain laundry, and the
taste is "unpleasant" among other things. The solution, they
say is to add phosphates (harmful to your health) to treat
the Texas water, which they call a nuisance!

The only way to ensure you're getting the best possible water for
your family's health is to filter it. The Big Berkey water system
not only provides you with daily health benefits, it's an excellent
prep to feel good about!

Now made in the USA, Big Berkey water filters have earned the
gold standard of gravity filtration by preppers. A Big Berkey is
important for preppers because it filters out dozens of
contaminants including:

  1. aluminum - aluminum is a neurotoxin: learn more about
aluminum dangers, not just in drinking water, but in cooking
    utensils and more.
  2. arsenic - Specifically the PF2 filters out Arsenic V and pre-
oxidized Arsenic III, as well as other residual heavy metal
ions. You simply screw the PF-2 Fluoride filter into the Black
    Berkey filters).
  3. bacteria and pathogens - Big Berkey filters can remove
disease-causing parasites, pathogenic bacteria, and cysts.
  4. BPA. The Berkey systems not only remove bisphenol A
(BPAs), but the Berkey units are also totally BPA-free.
  5. Chlorine. Berkey removes byproducts of the municipal
chlorination process, including chloramines, which are
    derivatives of ammonia.
  6. fluoride - Specifically the PF2 filters reduce fluoride added to
different water systems, including fluorosilicic acid, sodium
    fluorosilicate, and sodium fluoride.
  7. Heavy metals (mineral molecules) such as cadmium,
    chromium, copper, lead, and mercury.
  8. Herbicides and pesticides. Sometimes herbicides and
pesiticides sneak into the water supply, partcularly in
groundwater of agricultural regions. Berkey removes these
    toxins.
  9. Organic solvents. Organic solvents may sneak into the
water supply as well,a and again Berkey removes them.
  10. Nitrates.
  11. Trihalomethanes (formed especially during the chlorination
    of drinking water).
  12. uranium and radioactive particles, including radon 222 (a
radioactive, colorless, odorless gas that occurs naturally as a
    decay product of radium).
  13. Viruses. Waterborne outbreaks are not uncommon! Big
Berkey's method separates the virus contaminates from the
purified water. The Black Berkey purification elements
remove viruses greater than the EPA purification standards.

So which Big Berkey is Right for you?
There's a nice selection of Berkey Water filters and most systems
are expandable and come with two Big Berkey System filter
elements, plus a six-month warranty. The elements have a two
year warranty.

There are seven to choose from:

  1. Go Berkey Kit holds 1 quart of water. Consider it your
persona water filtration sysrem and everyday water bottle!
It's great for hunting, hiking and camping and provides up to
    50 gallons per day.

provides up to 60 gallons a day
  3. Big Berkey holds 2.5 gallons, small to medium sized
families (3-5 people) and provides up to 168 gallons a day,
which is ideal for most prepper families!
  4. Berkey Light holds 2.75 gallons and so it's also a great
choice for most prepper families. This is a BPA free and
lightweight option for bugging out or just for sporting
activities, like camping. It provides up to 192 gallons of
    fresh filtered water daily.
  5. Royal Berkey holds 32.5 gallons and holds up to 190
gallons a day. This Berkey is great for medium to large size
families (6-12 people) and is another excellent choice for
    preppers.
  6. Imperial Berkey holds 4.5 gallons is intended for small to
medium sized groups (much more than a dozen people) and
provides as much as 325 gallons of water filtration a day. If
you're expecting a few extra family members head to your
bugout location, then this is an ideal solution for you.
  7. Crown Berkey holds about 6 gallons and works best for
medium to large groups (from a few dozen to up to 150
people) and gives the capacity to filter up to 624 gallons a
day. Consider this Berkey if you expect work groups to show
up on your property when the stuff hits the fan or if you are
travelling on a religious or peace missions.

How to Clean your Big Berkey
Is your Berkey slowing down? Small particulate matter can
become trapped on the outside of the element. It may be time to
clean your Big Berkey! Ideally, you should clean your unit about
once a month. Here's the scoop on Big Berkey Water Filter
Cleaning...

The good news is that cleaning a Big Berkey is relatively easy!

  • Step one: Remove the upper chamber and place it on a
    clean and solid surface.

  • Step two: Unscrew the wing nuts that secure the unit.

  • Step three: Hold the element under the faucet with the exit
    hole pointed up.

  • Step four: Scrub each element for several minutes with the
goal of removing the outermost layer of the element. Berkey
recommends you use a 3M Scotch-Brite pad.  This process
should expose a new layer of open pours.

  • Step five: Rinse the element with water, placing a finger
over the hole where the water exits. This will prevent
contaminated water from entering the core of the element.

  • Step six: Reassemble and pour your next batch of water in
the top chamber. Your water will soon be ready to enjoy.

More Tips and Information About your Big Berkey

  • Always pre-filter raw water. While a Berkey can effectively
purify raw untreated pond, lake and river waters, alway use
the cleanest water possible. You can filter water first
through a cheesceloth or coffee filter or even a T-shirt to get
    reid of particulate matter.

  • Avoid heat source and too much sunlight. Find a good
place for the Berkey that's away from a heat source and
avoid direct sunlight (particularly a skylight) for extended
    periods.

  • Never boil and never microwave the heating elements!

  • Stay away from soaps. Never clean the elements with
detergents or soaps. Instead, a good cleaning option can be
apple cider vinegar and lemon juice, but it's not necessary.
    Never ever use a dishwasher.

  • Don't allow the elements to freeze. Like extreme
fluctuations of heat, the Berkey does not perform well in
    freezing conditions.

  • Avoid saltwater. The Big Berkey is not intented for use with
salt water. Desalinization is another process.

  • All about the Big Berkey and California Law...Unfortunately
some Big Berkey water filtration systems do not ship to
California. The no lead law. Rest assured the Big Berkey
does not have lead, it removes lead! The "no lead law"
appeared to have circumvented sales in Californai. You see,
even if a product and each component of that product has no
metal alloys and if a purification system actually reduces
lead, under Section 116875, it must be be certified.  Learn
more about the "no lead law": November 2009, California
    signed into law AB 1953 / SB 1334 & 1395 / HSC Section
116875 and as a result directly affected the sales of all
water filter and purification systems to the state.

So now you know the preferred way preppers filter water: Big
Berkey removes the most harmful viruses, bacteria, chemical
contaminants (such as chlorine), foul taste and odors; and can
remove heavy metals such as lead and mercury, and other
surprises lurking in your tap water, including arsenic and fluoride.

How are you going to store water for the long term? A family of
four needs 270 gallons of water for a three month supply
according to Utah State University.

Happy endings...
The Big Berkey is an important piece of your prepping supplies
because it will provide you with thousands of gallons of clean
drinking water for you and your family both in emergencies and
for everyday living.  You can feel good that Relief Organizations
such as UNICEF, the Peace Corps, Missionary organizations and
Red Cross Societies Internationally use the Berkey Water
Filtration System.

Berkey purification elements have been calculated to yield the
greatest volume of removal of viruses, toxic chemicals, and
bacteria. You can count on it.

  • Bottled water: $240 a year for your bottled water habit?
Bottled water is bad for your pocketbook: it can easily costs
a few hundred dollars a year, accroding to Naturally (Fall
2015). The price tag isn't the only problem. Preppers should
    heed these Bottled water warnings.

Berkey and Seychelle Makes a great Pair!
