Michigan: L e a d was found leaching into drinking water of
Flint, Michigan, as reported Sept. 27, 2015. The water was
piped in from Detroit. Researchers say road salt was
dangerously high, prompting heavy concerns.

New Mexico: A "Boil Water" advisory went to roughly 400
residents of luxury subdivision in Santa Fe’s west side in
August 2015. A test of microbiological contaminants showed
possible E. coli in the drinking supply, possibly from
stagnant water lines.

Texas: Boil orders in Texas during the great freeze isn't the
only water problem. In Texas some water is being treated
for having too much iron and manganese. This is perplexing
as there is no health problems. The water is a nuisance

to your health) to treat the Texas water, which they call a
nuisance!

How to Clean your Big Berkey
Is your Berkey slowing down? Small particulate matter can
become trapped on the outside of the element. It may be time to
clean your Big Berkey! Ideally, you should clean your unit about
once a month. Here's the scoop on Big Berkey Water Filter
Cleaning...

The good news is that cleaning a Big Berkey is relatively easy!

Step one: Remove the upper chamber and place it on a
clean and solid surface.

Step two: Unscrew the wing nuts that secure the unit.

Step three: Hold the element under the faucet with the exit
hole pointed up.

Step four: Scrub each element for several minutes with the
goal of removing the outermost layer of the element. Berkey
recommends you use a 3M Scotch-Brite pad. This process
should expose a new layer of open pours.

Step five: Rinse the element with water, placing a finger
over the hole where the water exits. This will prevent
contaminated water from entering the core of the element.

Step six: Reassemble and pour your next batch of water in
the top chamber. Your water will soon be ready to enjoy.

More Tips and Information About your Big
Berkey

Always pre-filter raw water. While a Berkey can effectively
purify raw untreated pond, lake and river waters, alway use
the cleanest water possible. You can filter water first
through a cheesecloth or coffee fi lter or even a T-shirt to get
rid of particulate matter.

Avoid heat source and too much sunlight. Find a good
place for the Berkey that's away from a heat source and
avoid direct sunlight (particularly a skylight) for extended
periods.

Clean, don't heat. Never boil and never microwave the
elements!

Stay away from soaps. Never clean the elements with
detergents or soaps. Instead, a good cleaning option can be
apple cider vinegar and lemon juice, but it's not necessary.
Never ever use a dishwasher.

Don't allow the elements to freeze. Like extreme
fluctuations of heat, the Berkey does not perform well in
freezing conditions.

Avoid saltwater. The Big Berkey is not intended for use
with salt water. Desalinization is another process.

All about the Big Berkey and California Law...
Unfortunately some Big Berkey water filtration systems do
not ship to California. The no lead law. Rest assured the Big
Berkey does not have lead, it removes lead! The "no lead
law" appeared to have circumvented sales in California. You
see, even if a product and each component of that product
has no metal alloys and if a purification system actually
reduces lead, under Section 116875, it must be certified.

California signed into law AB 1953 / SB 1334 & 1395 / HSC
Section 116875 and as a result directly affected the sales of
all water filter and purification systems to the state.
