generators pack around 5,000 to 7,000 watts, enough for
most needs, but here is a wattage calculator to help guide
    you further);

  • installing and operating a generator (some models don't
come with parts you'd expect to included with the price, but
    Amazon guides you through this process);

Top Considerations for buying a portable generator:

  • Safety features. Some generators come equipped with an
automatic shut-off to protect your generator's from damage
    of running on low oil.

  • Low emissions. Preppers from California, in particular should
make careful consideration for a generator with low
emissions. Just about any prepper should look for a portable
generator that meets requirements for CARB (California Air
Resources Board,) and the EPA (Environmental Protection
Agency). These agencies aim to reduce the amount of carbon
    released into the atmosphere.

  • Run time. Noting how much run time your generator will run
per gallon of gas will ensure you don't need to constantly
    refill every couple of hours.

Generator Safety Precautions for Preppers

  • Outlet warning. Never run your generator into a household
outlet. You may kill someone outside your building!

  • Carbon monoxide hazard/ No matter what generator you
select, be sure that you use a generator in a well-ventilated
space or you will risk carbon monoxide poisoning. Always run
generators outside and be sure they are a away from
windows and doors so that you will not jeopardize your
family with the toxic fumes. Never use a generator in an
attached garage as the toxic fumes will drift into your home.

  • Electrocution hazard: Before starting the generator, cut off
your house from the power grid; otherwise the energy from
your generator gets sucked out and could electrocute others
    working on the line.

  • Noise Danger. Generators tend to make a lot of noise. In
some survival situations you wouldn't want to attract
attention of human predators by running a generator.
Ultimately, the decision to run a generator could cost you
    your life.

A generator is an important decision. Buy the generator that fits
your wattage requirements. You can figure out your wattage
requirements by making a list of the appliances you want to run
on the generator and adding up the wattage requirements of
each. Here's
how to calculate wattage from the amps and volts.

Happy endings...
While buying a generator boils down to a balance of your needs
and the price, ultimately, your decision may depend on outside
factors. Preppers in California, for example, will want to take
particular note of CARB compliance.

And finally, to ensure a happy ending in an emergency, make sure
you have enough power strips with surge protectors handy. A
surge protector is often overlooked in prepping, but you'll need
one to help distribute the power from your generator safely.
